About Oraculum…

What is Oraculum?
oraculum logo - eye
Oraculum is a 2D, point & click, exploration narrative set in the not too distant future in the troubled dystopian city of Europa. A radical vision of an alternative future, where society has split due to a new technological drug called Focus. In the city of Europa, the population is controlled by the mega corporation Oraculum, using the Focus drug to infiltrate their everyday lives.
Below the city, in the subterranean society of Lower Europa, a population of anti-Oraculum individuals who have rejected the artificial paradise of above, live in exile and poverty.

The player takes on the role of Alice Leporium, a lifelong member of Oraculum’s security service, the ESA, and a Focus drug user. A year ago, following a spate of strange behavior, Alice’s twin brother Albus mysteriously disappeared and was never seen again. With Alice suspicious of the corporations involvement in her brother’s disappearance, and a sudden call from a mysterious stranger – Alice must go in search of Albus through the strange subterranean world of lower Europa, unfolding the true nature of Oraculum and her new role in shaping the future of Europa…

Demo Feedback

Today we got our feedback from the demo

DEMO MARK: 52%

More animation is needed.

Worry

They were worried because they have only seen 25% of our over all project – woried about workload. They Recommended a cut down of the story which will make it easier for design and animation.

They didn’t hear much audio,  Matt suggested to make audio more fluent through the transitions.

Design –  more, designs need work, suggest to take someone else on board – two contrasting designs/artists

Programming – lynsey help out – changing games – make more original (game for finale) – look at narrative, what suits it?

platform – design – more work

“pipe” game – needs to be more like a circuit

Research – so much theory and meaning behind the project – has a lot of potential

Voice over needed

Mini prep demo

Today we had a run through of the big demo with Matt and Donal. This was great as it allowed us to have a bit of practice before friday. They seemed impressed with the work we have done but commented on a few things:

Show files when speaking about them
Intro narration may be more involving for the user?
Edit the text – what really needs to be there – it refers to the same thing alot
Simplify it down
Audio – get more depth with the audio
Street scene = sound of the street
Train =sounds of a train
Bedroom scene needs to look more like the intro animation colours

After this meeting the group sat down and decided on what exactly was going to be mentioned in the demo and who was going to say it.

- Describe Project
- Research question
- Inspiration : Lipietz (Hourglass) / Mendras (Spinning top) / Kaplin (Society affects)

Digital divide (which took us to look at both sides)
- Social Shaping
- Technological Determinism

In our narrative (+ Heroes Journey) the user is thrown in an hourglass society, overall aim is to change to a more egalitarian society and transform it to a spinning top.
Using the metaphor of the focus drug    - – - –  The user destroys the drug and saves the society

Therefore our project is an instance of what could happen to society if technology splits.

- Research (Elena)
- Show + talk about narrative + user testing = findings (Evryn)
- Group Roles
- Timeline (3 weeks left)
- How we are going to represent the research – Using elements in the game to display (Posters)
- Press Release (Mention)
- Tech Document

Initially we planned on using the Think aloud method.
But decided against it because it is more suitable for interfaces or websites. At the stage we are at, it would not be suitable as they would not be able to talk very much about visual appeal, only about the challenges.

We decided on the use of Questionnaires:
This method was more suitable. We asked each of the subjects to fill out the questions associated with each challenge after they had played it.

The overall goals for the user testing was to find out:
Timing for each task
Understanding of each task
Interest in tasks
Challenge level
Mistakes
Improvements
Emotional response

Things we are aware of: *Needs to be mentioned in demo
Needing to have the intro narrated and maybe all the dialogue through the game?
Edit the text – what really needs to be there – it refers to the same thing a lot
simplify it down
Audio – get more depth with the audio
Street scene = sound of the street
Train =sounds of a train
bedroom scene needs to look more like the intro animation colours

Demo prep

Today we sat down and sorted out dates for each of us to hand up our parts. We decided on our puzzles and what exactly we will have done to show in the demo.

In Caroline’s class we spoke about:

RESEARCH PRESENTATION

Background research
Findings
Target audience

A2/A3 posters presenting information
Elements from the design
Picture frames from the design holding the information
Not too text heavy
Charts/Graphs
Should be starting point for conversation

How did we get to this point?
How did the research lead us to this place?
Demo
Ten minutes to show everything and talk about development
How we got from script to now – refer back to research then and now
Five to ten mins of q’ns
Think about the questions they are going to ask
“we are aware that …. is behind, this is our plan to get it done…”
Reasons why it’s behind
Make sure everything is tied together – programming
At least a section where you can navigate through and that is totally finished/highly polished

Talking about the project and research
Design
Focus groups findings..
Research – reasons behind decisions

Time plan about getting everything done in the last three weeks
Clear discussion with supervisors about what to show in demo
Talk around the project – practice the demo
Talk about difficulties/challenges that were overcome
Learning something outside of class
Press coverage – PR
Press release
